Symptoms of stress have been around for a very long time, but you can only learn to cope with them if you know about them. Here is a list of the top five ways to help you cope with stress.
Exercise
A good workout is one of the easiest ways to relax your mind and body. Along with that, exercising will improve your mood, but you have to do it regularly for it take effect. Mental health services recommend that you should work out up to two hours and thirty minutes of moderately intense exercises like jogging or brisk walks.
Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol
Avoid, or at least try to reduce, consumption of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages and nicotine. These are stimulants, which increase your stress level rather than reducing it. Swap these drinks for water, diluted fruit juices or herbal tea and overall just stay hydrated, as it will help your body better to avoid stress.
Take a deep breath
This is one of the most commonly shared advice. If you feel over stressed, make sure to stop and take a deep breath. If you need to change your immediate position, go out in the open and take a couple of deep breaths. It can take the pressure right off you and you’ll be surprised at how good it makes you feel.
Hit the bed
With the amount of pressure organizations are putting on their employees, if left unchecked, it could result in many sleepless nights. It could interrupt your sleep cycle which would leave you in a vicious cycle, where you won’t be able to sleep because of the stress and you won’t be able to get rid of the stress because you aren’t getting enough sleep. Rather than relying on medication, look for natural ways to relax and go to sleep.
Listen to some music
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you should take a break and try to listen to some smooth and calming music. Playing relaxing music affects the body positively, can reduce blood pressure and cortisol (a stress-linked hormone).
You can pick up any classical symphony, or one of my personal favorites i.e. Una Mattina by Ludovico Einaudi. If classical isn’t your thing, you can put on nature sounds as they have a similar relaxing effect.
